What To Do with Books You Purge

Wednesday, March 18, 2026

I love books as much as the next person but I only purchase what I will read again and again. If there are used book sales where it’s only $1-2 for a book I will stock up that way but I regularly clean out my bookshelves throughout the year so I never have too much taking up valuable space. That being said, here’s what I do, and what you can do also, with books that you purge from your bookshelves.

Donate to Little Free Libraries
I love Little Free Libraries and I often look up the ones near me on the LFL app. Keep an eye out and look for ones in your area and make sure you add books to them when cleaning out your shelves.

Donate to Libraries
My library takes book donations year round for them to sell at their annual book sale and they also sell the really new and good condition ones throughout the year on their sale shelf. It’s my little way of giving back to the library and the money they make off the sales is definitely helpful.

Pass to Friends
My best friend is a book lover too and she reads a ton just like me so I often send her a photo of the books I’m getting rid of and she can let me know if she wants to check any out. I set them aside in a bag for the next time I see her in person.

Décor
Sometimes I use a stack of books as décor on another shelf in my home but I usually only do it with the pretty colored books. You can also take books that are old and damaged otherwise and save them in your craft area so you can use the pages as scrapbooking material.

Book Swaps
There are actual book swaps both in person and virtually that are a great way to pass on books you no longer wish to keep. I haven’t done this because I have enough friends to swap with but it’s always an option.

It’s okay to ruthlessly declutter books, just remember to pass the love on in the ways I mentioned above so everyone gets to enjoy them like you did.
