Natural light can totally transform the look and feel of your home, as well as being really good for your health, so it is always a good idea to let as much sunlight into your space as you possibly can. Your home will feel much bigger, more inviting and more comfortable to hand out in if you do, right?
But how exactly do you let more light into your home/ Here are a few things that can help:
Start by clearing obstructions
The first thing you will need to do is think about anything that could be obscuring the light’s path into your home. This could be anything from heavy curtains to overgrown plants and even outdoor obstacles like trees or fences.
In fact, outdoor obstacles are often the most problematic, having a dramatic impact on how much light you see inside. For example, trimming back large shrubs or considering tree removal where appropriate can allow significantly more sunlight to reach your home.
By clearing these obstructions, you can instantly brighten interior spaces without making changes inside.
Choose lighter window treatments
Window coverings are necessary for decor and so that you can have privacy in the home when you need it, but they can also be major blockers of light if you do not choose wisely, so it is a good idea to choose window treatments that are made from lighter fabrics like sheer curtains or blinds, which still let sunlight filter through while giving you the privacy you seek.
Oh, and neutral colours can also help reflect light rather than absorb it, so it is a good idea to choose neutral colors for your window treatments, too.
Use mirrors to reflect light
Mirrors are one of the easiest ways to increase the amount of light in a room. When placed strategically, they reflect both natural and artificial light, helping to brighten darker areas, and doing so much more effectively than you might think.
Positioning a mirror opposite or near a window can amplify the effect of incoming sunlight. Larger mirrors or mirrored furniture can further enhance this effect and make the room feel more open, so the bigger the better, right?
Keep windows clean
It’s an obvious point but if your windows are dirty and grimy then they are not going to get as much light in and the light that does get in will not seem nearly as bright. Regularly cleaning both the inside and outside of your windows, then, ensures that you are getting the maximum amount of natural light available to you at any given time, and it really doesn’t take much time or effort, so there is no reason not to keep on top of them.
Use light colors inside
The colors you choose for your walls, floor, and furniture can all have an impact on how light moves around your home and how bright it feels. Light colors reflect light, whereas dark ones absorb it, so by using soft, neutral tones like white or cream, you can brighten your space dramatically and make sure your home feels as light and airy as you want it to.
Let there be light!
