Earth Day should be every day, but it’s not… so I’m taking this chance before Earth Day rolls around to mention a few things we can do to take better care of the planet.
Plant Native
When it comes to flowers, shrubs, and trees, do your research and see what’s native in your region. Planting native ensures that the native bugs and birds have plenty of food. Native plants thrive in their natural environment so it’s actually less upkeep than planting a non native.
Pick Up Litter
Even if it’s not yours… pick it up! If you have a park or walking trail near you, bring a bag and some gloves and pick up the trash you see. If you have a body of water near you – even better, as windy days can cause loose trash to blow into waterways.
Reuse
Recycling and reducing how much we use is important but I want to highlight reusing things. We already have certain stuff and we don’t want to let it go to waste so it’s important to think outside the box for ways to reuse things like empty jars (I use them for storage, herbs, etc.) and old newspapers or magazines (I use them to put on the table when we have crab legs and I use the magazines for scrapbooking and crafts). Before you buy something or bring something new into your home, start asking yourself if it’s a one time use thing and if it’s necessary.
Stop Waste
We are so wasteful with so many things. We buy cheap decorations for a 2 hour party and then throw it all away when it could be reused or the décor wasn’t really needed to begin with. Start being very mindful of ALL your actions so you get into the habit of buying less, using less, and tossing less.
Be Kind to Wild Neighbors
We seem to be entitled to think that animals in our yard like birds and squirrels are a burden. The truth is – nature is their home first. We need to share it with them. Slow down when going through area where there is woods and wildlife crossing the road, be aware of turtles crossing in the nesting season, and stop being so harsh to the critters in your yard that are just trying to survive. Coexisting with nature is VERY IMPORTANT.
This month and every month, let’s do more for the planet, one person at a time.
