How to Prepare for a Garden Shopping Haul

Monday, April 13, 2026

Soon we will no longer have the fear of frost and we can all begin planting our gardens and garden beds. Each year I do a big shopping haul at a local garden center for everything I need for the rest of the season with a few exceptions of things that aren’t ready till later in the season. I have a whole routine and plan when I do this so I figured today I would explain that.

Examine Your Space

I first go around to each container and each garden bed in my yard to see what space I have and see how things fared through the Winter. I write down what needs replaced and I have a little map drawn up of what I plant where in my beds so that makes it easy for me to see the space I have. This helps me get a count of how much of each flower, plant, or crop I can get.

Plan Arrangements

For containers, I put several plants in each one so I go around and see how many containers survived the Winter without cracking. Then I know how many I need to fill and I plan out what will go in them then count up how many of each I need to buy.

Veggie Gardens

For my herb and veggie gardens I take a look at what did well last year and what I will want to do this year. I map everything out and I look at where things will fit in my veggie garden. Then I decided what I want to grow from seed and what I want to buy as a seedling from the store.

Price Research

Just to get an idea at how much things will cost, I’ll go look at the latest ad for the nursery or garden center and then add everything up. I try to stick to a general budget but I do allow myself to splurge if I see something cool I didn’t originally plan on.

Write A Neat List

I then make a very neat final list of what to buy and it’s all broken down by type (herb, vegetable, annual, perennial, and garden supplies) so it’s easier for me to shop by section rather than run all over the garden center which can get tricky when you have a heavy cart packed with plants.

Shopping Trip

I plan what day and time I’ll go to the garden center and I usually go right when they open so there’s lots to pick from and I have plenty of time to get home and plant.

Planting

Once I’m home I set everything near the bed it will go in and then I place everything in it’s spot and I get digging!
