Prescription Drug Abuse Increasing for Women

In the past 15 years, the number of women who have become addicted to prescription drugs has increased dramatically. Prescription painkillers are the drug of choice for many women, and according to a study by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there was a dramatic increase of drug overdose deaths for women. Doctors prescribe 50 percent more painkillers to women than men. The best solution for becoming drug-free is to visit a rehabilitation center that focuses on women’s health such as New River Wellness Center.

Why More Women than Men?

According to a National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2010, women are more likely to express their health issues to a doctor or other healthcare provider than men. This is the main reason they receive more prescriptions. The most common drugs prescribed are anti-depressants, painkillers and drugs given for ADHD/ADD. The illness may be valid, and the drug prescribed may be medically the correct one, but these drugs are habit-forming. A woman who would never take an illegal drug or overindulge in alcohol use may not see any taboo in taking a prescription drug to the point where she is addicted.

What Is the Remedy?

The withdrawal symptoms for drug addiction to opiate painkillers appear soon after the last dose. This is why addicts are constantly worried that they won’t enough of the drug. They often change pharmacies regularly, so they don’t appear to be buying too much. This is the main reason they need a caring and comfortable environment for the early stages of detoxification.

Women have different issues than men when it comes to getting help for an addiction. Whether it is prescription drugs, illicit drugs or alcohol, many women find that the process becomes easier when their personal issues are taken into consideration. For example, each person has a different environment they need to return to when the treatment is completed. They may be a single student returning to college, or a mother returning to caring for three children, or they may be going thought a divorce. A center that focuses on women’s issues will have experienced, trained professionals handling women’s specific needs during the recovery process.

If you or someone you love is knowingly or unknowingly addicted to prescription drugs, there is help. You can discuss your situation with a caring and empathetic addiction specialist and find the best treatment to get back to a drug-free life.
