Why Puerto del Carmen is the Ideal Holiday Destination for All Types of Travellers

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

Puerto del Carmen, like many other areas in Lanzarote, was once just a humble fishing village, but now it offers so much more for families, couples and groups of friends alike.

Situated by the coast on the southern central part of the island, Puerto del Carmen is a mere 10-minute drive from the nearest airport and is conveniently located for exploring other areas in Lanzarote if you so wish to do so.

However, there is definitely enough going on in Puerto del Carmen itself to keep you occupied for the entire duration of your stay; whether that be a long weekend, a week or a coveted 14-day break.

From the stunning golden beaches, to the exciting water sports on offer, to the multitude of shopping opportunities; there really is something for everyone.

Let’s start with the beaches themselves, as who doesn’t want a chance to top up their tan or enjoy a splash in the ocean when on their holiday?

Blue flag beaches
Boasting a 6km stretch of golden, silky sand and waters that are known for their tranquillity, you’d be pressed to find more beautiful beaches in the whole of the Canary Islands.

Below are the top beaches in Puerto del Carmen:
Playa Grande
Aptly named, Playa Grande is the largest beach in Puerto del Carmen, stretching for 1.2km and offering calm waters as well as a children’s playground, making it the ideal choice for families.

Playa Chica
This a much smaller beach that is great for divers; make sure that you head out to Shrimp Cave to see some local marine life.
Los Pocillos
The second longest beach in Puerto del Carmen, this is the place to head if you want to try out some local water sports. It is also worth noting that this beach is wheelchair friendly.
If you have always fancied trying windsurfing, then this is the beach for you. There is also a great selection of local restaurants nearby.
El Barranquillo
Perfect for wellness enthusiasts and yoga fanatics alike, this beach is quiet, secluded and has one of the best sunsets around.
Sports for everyone
If you prefer to be a little less horizontal on holiday, at least for some of the time, then Puerto del Carmen will definitely be able to help you.

Famous for its array of sporting activities on offer, you will be guaranteed to find something that the whole family can enjoy.
Diving & Windsurfing
For water lovers, there are several excellent local schools and centres that allow you to experience diving, snorkelling, wind surfing or regular surfing for the day. Don’t worry if you are just a beginner, there are lessons available for all abilities.
Cycling & Running
If you fancy a family bike ride or want to explore as a group, why not hire a bicycle from one of the many bike hire shops along the main beach promenade. Alternatively, for a completely free activity, simple pop on your running shoes and take a scenic sprint along the beach.
Who doesn’t love a bit of golf on a sunny afternoon? Whether you are away with the lads and fancy a few holes or you are a parent wanting a few hours of peace, there is a golf course just outside Puerto del Carmen on the road to Tias.

Be a spectator
If you love sports but don’t want to get sweaty on your holidays, the Lanzarote IronMan triathlon takes place on the Avenida de las Playas every year in May/June, and is an event not to be missed.
Somewhere special to stay
If you want a bit of luxury when on holiday, then a villa is the ideal option for you. Perfect for families, couple and groups of friends alike, villas in Puerto del Carmen are spacious, lavish and offer a level of independence that is impossible if you choose to stay in a hotel.

When staying in a villa, you have your own private pool, can come and go as you please, have a relaxed meal without the noise of other guests and essentially tailor your holiday to you and your guests’ exact needs.

You also have the choice of whether to book a villa that is situated in the thick of all the action, making it extremely easy to visit the local hotspots. Or if you are seeking a bit more tranquillity, you can simply choose a villa that is situated in a more remote location.

Entertainment & nightlife
For those who love nothing more than a good night out, then Puerto del Carmen should definitely be on your radar. Legendary for its lively promenade, you can enjoy a range of lively disco pubs, lounge and cocktails bars – just make sure you don’t go too mad! You will even have the chance to dust off your vocal cords and indulge in a bit of karaoke if the mood takes your fancy; you can never hear too many renditions of Kings of Leon ‘Sex on Fire’ now can you?

Alternatively, if you have children, why not head over to Lanzarote’s first open air cinema which can be found on the top floor of the shopping centre in the old town? Just make sure you book your tickets in advance as it is very popular.

Another option in the old town perfect for families is spending an evening at the Harbour. There is a wide selection of family-appropriate restaurants and bars as well as a very close playground, so that you can relax and enjoy the ambience whilst your children play within your sight.

As you can see, Puerto del Carmen is a fun holiday choice for families, couples and friends, with so much to do and so many sights to see. You will never get bored if you pick this action-packed town as your next holiday destination.

So, if you’re wishing you were there rather than sitting at home, what are you waiting for? Start packing!
