Being an effective cat parent is all about being observant. It takes more than going on petness.com and getting your cat the highest-rated paw balm. There are a lot of things you can pick up on by just paying close attention to your cat’s behaviors and physical appearance. Your cat’s nose is one of the most telling body parts. Your cat’s nose will tell you if he or she is thirsty, sick or other health problems. If you are new to being a cat parent, here is why you should pay close attention to your kitten’s nose and what to look for.

Know What A Healthy Cat Nose Looks Like

It can be hard to discern if your cat is unhealthy by looking at his or her nose if you first do not understand what makes a healthy cat nose. It is commonly known that your cat’s nose should be kind of moist, though their moistness may vary throughout the day depending on the cat. Some cat’s noses are drier than others. You should see no kind of discharge. The air should be moving from both nostrils at the same time and with the same force. When it comes to the outside of the nose, you want to be sure that your cat’s nose is symmetrical. There should not be any masses growing.

What To Do If You See Discharge

In the event you see discharge coming out of your kitten’s nose, pay close attention to the color of the discharge as it can be a sign of sickness. If your cat is sneezing and there is some discolored discharge coming out of his or her nose, your cat could be sick with a respiratory infection. It could also signify that something foreign is stuck up your cat’s nose. Either way, you need to seek veterinary help as soon as possible to avoid further complications.

What To Do If Your Cat’s Nose Is Dry

A dry cat nose can mean a lot of things. For one, it could be a sign of dehydration or maybe even a fever. You may want to keep a close eye on this one though because a dry nose can also mean that your home has dry air, or maybe your cat has been playing near the furnace for three hours a day. These are all factors that go into your cat’s dry or moist nose.

Another thing to look for is the color. If your cat’s nose is pale, your cat could be anaemic. If you notice that your cat’s nose has a yellow tinge to it, he or she needs to be looked at by a vet as soon as possible.

Other Things To Pay Attention To

You want to pay close attention to your cat’s breathing. If you notice that your cat is not properly breathing through his or her nostrils, something could be very wrong with your cat and you should contact a vet immediately. Naturally, cats have to breath out of their noses. A cat that breaths out of his or her mouth is not normal. You should also contact your vet if you notice that your cat is excessively licking his or her nose.
