Debt & How To Deal - with Polk Advisors

Friday, April 3, 2020

Debt is no fun at all. It stresses you out, it rules your decisions, and it's a major source of frustration in relationships and family units. When it comes to financial goals,  most people have becoming debt free as one of their top goals.  But unfortunately, many people also feel overwhelmed and they don't know where to start with this financial goal.  Today I'm going to talk about how to deal with debt and how Polk Partners can help.

First, you  need to change your lifestyle and financial habits.   You can't get yourself out of a hole if you just keep digging yourself back into it.  So you need to take a long hard look at your spending and where your money is going.   Do you really need to buy lunch everyday or can you save money by packing a lunch or eating last night's leftovers?

You also need to come up with a budget that you can live by and follow it every time you get paid.  Allocate your funds to the expenses you need like utilities and rent, and then decide how to split whatever is left over into categories for things you need to save for and paying down your debt.

It's always important to have money set aside in savings to help with sudden expenses so that you don't go into debt to cover those expenses.  This is usually the mistake people make which keeps them in the position of being in debt.  Again, you can't fix anything unless you actually change your behavior and bad habits.

So do whatever you can at first to come up with about $500-$1,000 in an emergency savings fund so that you always have some money stashed aside for the unexpected emergencies that can pop up in life.  And if you have to dip into it, make sure you try to build it back up as quickly as possible for the next emergency.

Once you are on a budget, putting money into savings, and have an emergency fund, you can deal with your debt.
