When it comes to marketing and whatever business or service you're trying to promote, we tend to think of social media and digital advertising. But there's so many more outlets to advertise and one of them has been around as long as any of us have been alive. You see with public speaking you are using a new tactic to engage and interact with people in real life to promote your offerings. This isn’t a new tactic by any means because obviously before the internet, speaking was a huge way to spread the word to folks.
Speaking is important for so many great reasons. To start, it educates people and is one of the most effective ways to capture your audience and potential future customers is to educate them on your product or service. You should describe it in great detail and then explain how it can effectively work. Remember, every product should offer a solution for something. Whether it’s a book with financial advice for individuals or businesses or it's an actual tangible product, it provides a resolution for an issue someone has.
Sam Haskell is an author and speaker and his speaking helps promote his written work. and those two services together can be very powerful. Speaking is an amazing way to present a proposal to work together at times as well. You can truly sell yourself by explaining your service, informing others of your costs, and letting people know how you can personally help whomever you are present too. It’s important to do research on the organization or company you’re speaking to so you can figure out what needs they may have that you can meet. It’s also important to allow time for questions and answers afterwards.
When speaking, you should always be personable. A little humor is fine and so is actively engaging with the audience by using someone as an example hypothetically. This gets them involved and keeps their attention so they aren’t distracted the entire time you’re speaking.
Speaking at it’s core really just helps to get the word about you out there. Some may not even know of your existence and your business before you present and that means you have to make a great first impression. Be presentable with your attire, bring props or slides and handouts, and speak with enthusiasm. It’s imperative that you rehearse what you plan to say, preferably in front of a friend or family member so you can get their feedback. If nerves are getting the best of you just remember, they don’t know what you’re going to say because you’re the expert on your subject matter so all they’re doing is eagerly learning.
It’s always important to display your logo when speaking. You want something they will remember you by easily. Have it displayed on the slides, the handouts, and even on signage right where you’re speaking. Remember that you want to make an impact so you stay fresh in people’s minds. Another great way to start connecting with the audience right off the bat is by telling a personal story they can relate to. It helps to get them ready to listen to you because they’ll immediately resonate with you and be intrigued to hear more.
As for costs, if you are speaking to a smaller group, a fee may not even be necessary as you’re just trying to get some business. If you are speaking in front of a large group and presenting information you’ve researched to explain various topics to them, there’s a little more work behind that so you should consider a reasonable fee.
Again, speaking is a great way to promote what you can offer to people, so go for it and don’t hold back!
