My Happiness Project - August - Contemplate the Heavens - COMPLETE!

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

My Happiness Project for the month of August was to Contemplate the Heavens.

Ways I did this were:
1. Keep a Gratitude Diary
2.  Read Books about Tragedy
3.  Be grateful for the people in my life.
1. Keep a Gratitude Diary
I kept a small notebook at my desk at work and everyday I came in I wrote down 3 things I was thankful for. They were anything from fair weather, someone holding the door for me that day, my health, a specific friend, and just a simple material object like my favorite shirt. It made me realize everything I have in my life and how lucky I really am.
2.  Read Books About Tragedy
I highly suggest you read the book The Best Worst Thing by Kristen Brown. I did and it changed my life. Kristen lost her husband suddenly at a young age and I am telling you that if you read this book it will have a huge impact on the way you live your everyday life! Just trust me.

3. Be Grateful for the People in my life.
Recently, I went through some very trying times and man did it open my eyes to how supportive people are to me and how loved I really am. But that's not enough...nope. For me, I needed to show them as part of this project. I made sure to tell them all how much I was blessed to have them help me through some of the darkest times in my life.    Simple as that!
Check back tomorrow for September's Happiness Project which is to Pursue a Passion!

My Behind the Wheel Experience in the 2013 Mazda5

Thursday, August 29, 2013

My week with the 2013 Mazda5 was a great one and I loved so many of the exterior/interior features of the Mazda5 as well as the engine of this minivan!   So here's how it was for my behind the wheel!

Handling

Of course I had to see how this minivan handled the PA back roads, and let me tell you it hugged every curve and to my surprise, stuff wasn’t flying back and forth on the floor at every curve or turn.

It handles sharp turns like a pro!

Ease of Driving

I assumed that the Mazda5 wouldn’t accelerate like a typical vehicle and I would have to drive it like a grandma, but I must say, when I needed to merge onto the highway or speed up to pass someone, this vehicle was quick and steady.

My Honda Civic Got Some Accents!

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

My Honda Civic is my pride and joy, and she's been paid off for almost a year now. So
of course it's only natural that I want to make her look just a little bit nicer than she already does. So, I decided to plasti-dip her emblems black.

Isn't she beautiful? :) Hey, she's paid off so I can do whatever I want to her now!

4 Popular Pet Peeves for Guys in Relationships (From Actual Guys!)

That's right... I asked real guys that I know to give me some of their biggest pet peeves when it comes to relationships and women.

INTERRUPTING

Why:
Guys aren't as expressive as women are so when they are talking, they really want to get their thought out and be heard.   It's frustrating when they can't fully vent to you or explain their side of a situation because they keep getting cut off.

How you can stop doing this:
Shhhh, LISTEN.   Just listen.....  even if you already know what he's going to say or you already want to counter a point he justmade, just be quiet and listen and then take a deep breath before you begin to speak.

PHOTOSHOPPING PHOTOS OF THEIR FACES

Why:
They know they admire photos of supermodels in magazines, but that doesn't mean they want to date one.   Face it, we fall for people because we were attracted to them and seeing a blemish on someone's face in a photo isn't going to make anyone instantly disgusted and repulsed by you.  Men love a girl that isn't afraid to show her confidence with a yoga pants, no makeup, non-instagram editted photo that they get in their text messages.

How you can Stop doing this:
Stop trying to hide every little imperfection! Remember, after you meet someone you will always recognize their face and see it simply as THEM!   No guy ever sits there and says, "Hmm her one piece of hair is out of place, and she needs to fix her eye liner on her one eye."

Henry Ferrera Brings us Some Stylish Rain Boots for Women

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

It is not always easy dressing on rainy days. Some rain boots lack style and are not shoes that the everyday woman enjoys wearing. Henry Ferrera has several styles of rain boots that can change your outlook on rainy days for good! Infinity shoes carries three different styles of stylish shoes for women. The first pair is the Henry Ferrera Thunder these are a classic rain boot style. The boots come in all black and they have a 1-inch heel, are slip resistant and made of all vegan material. Infinity shoes also carries a very similar black rain boot with a 2.5 wedge heel. These boots are great for adding style and sophistication with the wedge heel. The third style of rain boot is the Oxford. This boot also comes in black and features a decorative red toggle-and-loop feature. The construction of the boot is rubber but the boot does not appear to be rubber at all. These boots are great for rainy days when you want to wear rain boots but not feel like you are walking on rubber. These boots are an absolute must throughout the year and will make a great addition to your wardrobe.

3 Benefits of a Clothing Fund in Your Budget

If you haven’t even thought of controlling your spending through an envelope system,  it’s not too late to start.  Just because you are on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t buy anything for yourself.  When I originally wrote about it in My Guide to Being on ABudget  I made sure to explain that one of my expenses I allow myself each month is clothing.

Using a clothing envelope has many benefits:

It forces you to plan your spending.
If you only get $100 for each season, you will pretty much map out where you wanna go and what you need to buy that your wardrobe lacks.     Think about it….have you ever bought multiples of the same type of shirt or jeans?   If you only have a certain amount available to spend, you are much more likely to skip over that nice black tshirt, considering you already have 3 at home.  You would much rather spend your money on something you don’t have.

You will make smarter spending decisions. Instead of buying those $80 shoes, you’ll notice that you start looking for the best deal on a particular style of shoes.   This means less impulse buys.

You will use coupons.
Next time you see a coupon for 20% off an item from your favorite department store, you are more likely to take advantage of it and really think before you decide what item to spend it on.

Have you started using a clothing envelope yet?

2013 Mazda5 - A More Technical Look

Last week I gave you a basic rundown of the interior and exterior features of the 2013 Mazda5 , so today I  wanted to go over some more technical features, like security & safety, engine features, etc.

Fuel Economy

The 2013 Mazda5 gets 24 MPG, with 22 in the city and 28 on the highway.  Basically 4.2 gallons can give you around 100 miles.   And I certainly noticed this was true, since I received this vehicle with a full tank and I barely used any gas even though I drove it a lot!

Engine/Mechanical Features

The 2013 Mazda5 has a 2.5L DOHC 16-valve engine.  It’s a front wheel drive vehicle with an electronic hydraulic power assist steering system.

Don' t Break the Bank for A Ring

Monday, August 26, 2013

Engagement rings are a critical component of any marriage ceremony. They are the first element of the proceedings, since they always come with the proposal of marriage. This makes them something that's very important to get right; everyone wants to start a marriage with their best foot forward. The best thing you can do to make sure you're getting the best ring is to do your due diligence and look into what's available within your budget. More recently, people have taken to looking online. This has advantages and disadvantages.

The primary advantages of looking online are variety and affordability. You can find affordable diamond engagement rings at SkydellDesign.com and similar online jewelers. These tend to be more affordable than purchasing them in person owing to the lower overhead costs of operating a website as compared to running a local store. Online sources will provide you with more options to pick from, and also allow you to comparison shop for different prices.

However, the disadvantage to shopping online is the way it separates you from the product itself. Ultimately, you won't be able to see the ring in person, and will have to rely on photographs. For something sentimental that relies largely on subjective qualities for its aesthetics, having to rely on a stylized picture taken in a studio isn't necessarily the ideal circumstance to judge a ring under.

Shopping online is viable for engagement rings, but it does come with a tradeoff. All the same, everyone can benefit from at least a cursory glance at what's available on the web.

How A Hat Can Make an Outfit

If you're getting ready to plan a fantastic Halloween party, rest assured that there are many ways you can make your party one to remember. You'll want your party to be absolutely flawless from the decor to the food to the costumes in order to make it something your friends will be talking about for years to come.

First off, get a caterer. Don't try to make all the food by yourself. That's a fast way to get stressed out and to forget important details about the important. Interview caterers a few months in advance to start finding someone who will make your food the way you want it.

Next, choose decorations that are scary and exciting. You might even consider having a themed party. For example, you could have a mummy-themed party and have everyone come in Egyptian costumes. Another option would be to host a zombie-themed party and have everyone come dressed in their best gory outfits.

Finally, make sure you find the perfect outfit for yourself. After all, you're the host. Everyone will remember what you wore and how you wore it. You can shop safari hats at KillerHats.com to accessorize even the simplest of outfits. Remember that elaborate isn't always better. In fact, some of the most memorable costumes are the easiest to make.

I have always looked at my car as an investment so I take pride in always keeping up to date with the maintenance and service, as well as keeping the interior in clean crisp condition.   Husky Liners understands how much the interior of my car means to me and that's why they offer a fantastic line of products for your automotive needs.  They have cargo liners, front and back seat floor liners, heavy duty floor mats, mud guards, tailgates, under seat storage boxes, protection films, and more!

Their liners are custom fit for your specific vehicle and come in different colors to match your interior.   Floor Liners are such a great idea for all different lifestyles of the people driving cars.  If you have a job where you get super dirty, it's okay if you track dirt and mud into your car because these liners are easy to remove and clean.   If you love being outdoors and camping and hiking, it's okay if your dirty camping gear is in your trunk, because the protective liner ensures your carpeted area stays clean!

I received a full set of WeatherBeater Floor Liners from Husky Liners.   I chose grey to match my car and I even got a trunk liner!

My trunk looks so much nicer with this floor liner, plus it's much easier to clean it by simply wiping it down or hosing it off.   And I no longer have to worry about liquid spills from groceries!

An Upclose Look at the Mazda5 Grand Touring Edition

    Friday, August 23, 2013

When I arrived home from work to find the 2013 Mazda5 waiting for me in the driveway, I was very surprised at how sleek and sporty it looked right away.   It isn't as big and bulky in appearance like most minivans so the fact that it is considered a minivan is very surprising to me!   Of course once you see the inside, you'll see why it's a minivan.

Over the next week I'll share my experience with this vehicle in different scenarios but first I wanted to give everyone an in depth look at the inside and outside of the Mazda5.

    EXTERIOR

I love the sleek rounded design of the exterior and the grill is very unique!

     photo b5bdabe9-91f3-468c-b8c1-ed23d808cc56_zps2af246ab.jpg
I have to say out of everything about the Mazda5, the backend is the only thing that reminds me of a minivan on the outside.   It has a boxier design yet the taillights give it a modern look.

Crab Cruise on The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat RECAP

I had an absolute blast over the weekend at the Crab Cruise on The Pride of the Susquehanna on Sunday. The cruise ran from 6-8pm and included all you can eat crabs from Harbor House Crabs.

We arrived promptly and the Captain already greeted us with his usual jokes and warm wishes for a great experience. We boarded at 5:45pm and found our own table to sit at. The tables already had crackers and other crab tools on them, as well as a giant paper covering to make it easier to clean up.

We were so excited to dig in! Everyone formed a line and we were served 3 crabs at a time. They were delicious!!! The weather was perfect and the windows on the cabin of the boat were open which let a perfectly relaxing breeze in. It was such a great time and a perfect idea for a date night.

    Bucket List Item: Embracing Minimalism

    Tuesday, August 20, 2013

This site has affiliate links and sponsored content. Read my Disclosure Policy.

I got to cross another thing off my Bucket List recently!  I have embraced minimalism!  Before you start shaking your head, let me explain that minimalism doesn’t mean having nothing except, like 4 items in your home…it means making more with less.   Do I really need all the stuff I have?   No!  After having to move several times over the past couple of years, it really put in to perspective how much crap I had that I didn’t need or use.

Here are some ways I began to embrace minimalism.
I sold my dvds and my dvd rack.  I didn’t even watch them all and some were unopened from when I bought them on sale.

I haven’t bought any new clothing and I got rid of the excess of what I already had.   I used ebay to sell handbags and shoes and some nice clothing items I had barely worn (if at all).  I also cut down on the amount of duplicates I had with, for example, black tshirts….do I really need 5? No, so I got rid of the 3 rattiest ones and kept 2.

Outfit of the Day: Pre-Autumn Plaid & Boots

Fall is in the air, just a bit... so I am embracing some darker colors and patterns, which means I get to wear plaid again.  I love plaid because I can match up my pants to the different colors in my plaid shirts.

    Purple Pants Plaid Shirt outfit
    Purple Pants Plaid Shirt outfit

Here I made the dark purple in the shirt pop out by pairing it with some purple skinny jeans.

And to kick off Fall (literally!) I finished my look with a pair of black Toby Boots from Just Fab

They are super comfy, and I love the embellished buckles!   Plus, they aren't tight at the ankle so it's the perfect fit for me!

If I Could Give You One Blog Post of Advice for the Future...THIS WOULD BE IT

    Sunday, August 18, 2013

Lately,  I was thinking...  of how much I always enjoyed the Baz Luhrmann song "Everybody's free to wear sunscreen" where he basically gives an amazing package of advice for the future. And of course, as an advice blogger, it hits home to me to be able to put all the best advice you can think of into one five minute summary and hope that people listen to it, trust it, and share it.

Personally, if you want an impact from this blog post... take 10 minutes... watch the below video. Absorb it. And then read the rest of my blog post.

That  speech was made in 1999 and since times have changed a bit.. I figured I would write my own version.... based on the format and style he used... but I am including some things that may affect people currently that weren't even in existence back then....  I hope you enjoy.  I hope you share, and I hope you at least try to keep these in mind for your future.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of 2014.... Exercise....

If I could give you one key to a better life and to help get through the rough patches... ... exercise
    would be
    it.

    Walk, run, jump, stretch, lift.
Some of the long term benefits of exercise have been scientifically proven to improve your mental health, and support your health and well being.  Where the rest of my advice has no basis than my own realistic experience....

I promise that if you take this to heart and absorb it in your head... it WILL improve your life.

    I will dispense this advice
     ....
    now...

Slow down and enjoy the little things while you're young.
    But you won't...
you won't enjoy the little things until you look back and realize that you missed them.

In 10 years, you'll look back at parts of your life that were so simple and easy...
and you'll see how much time you wasted thinking they were hard and wishing the days away.

You are not as pale as you imagine.

    Laugh....

Don't worry about the future... or if you do,
    just remember that
    worrying is
    pointless & fictional
and if you make decisions based on worrying and fear, you'll 9 times out of 10 regret them.
    (VICIOUS CYCLE)

You can't help the decisions that other people will make, but you can help the obsession you have with worrying about them.

    S l o w     d o w n....

Don't day dream too far past the current year.... but plan things with people special to you, as far ahead as your mental datebook can go.

    <3
When you love, pretend it's the first time you love.
and love like you never have been hurt before.
    <3

Don't spend too much time on  Facebook.

People will post better pictures than you
     celebrate milestones before you
and have better news than you do....
but the only newsfeed you should worry about reading...

    .....is  your own.

If you need to feel loved and wanted by something other than yourself...get a dog.
If you still need to feel loved and wanted by something other than yourself...get another dog.

    :-Cry...

even if you are alone, even if you are with someone...
watch a sad movie, call your best friend, but
     do not hold emotions in
     it will only
    make you
    feel
    worse!

Don't let a cell phone rule your life.   Enjoy the outdoors, hang out with your neighbors, and meet new people through real life situations.

At least one time in your life, pay for coffee for the person behind you in line.
    Hug a soldier.

Even if you don't support war, even if you don't like the president...
Always thank those that do something to protect you.

Send flowers to your grandparents 4 times a year.

Date as much as you want.
Learn from every dating experience that doesn't work out.
And don't make the same mistake (mistake) twice.

    Read...
You'll learn new words, new ways to express yourself,
and your imagination at any age, will continue to grow.

Understand that money itself will not make you happy.
But working hard to make money and survive on a day to day basis is the key to life and will make you feel genuinely good inside.

Don't buy things just to have them.   Having less is more.

Go to college... (if you want)
or if you want to work after high school that's fine too...
    It's your life so
    Whatever you do
make sure it's moving you forward to your future
not holding you in one place.

It's okay to do whatever you have to in order to make yourself happy.

You can not please others until you are pleased with yourself!
If you think you do a good job at something, be pleased.   And only then will you notice how pleased others are with you.

Make sure you are able to live with yourself....
We all come into this world
    alone,
and we will all leave this world
    alone,
so make sure you can stand yourself the entire time.

    Appreciate.
Life can be cut short at any moment, so everyday write down or say out loud
5 things you are grateful for that day.

    Smile at children.

Notice things in nature.  Enjoy sounds of water, wind, and thunderstorms.  These things are free and are simple.

Don't litter, because someday, you may be living amongst the trash you have left behind.

    Make promises!!!!!!!!!!!
Even if you can't keep them.....
It's a great way to set standards for yourself and teaches you responsibility.

Don't allow yourself to have any fair-weather friends.
If they don't like you at your dark times, you don't need them in your light moments.

    PRAY
no matter who it's to or how you do it.... embrace spiritualism and do what brings peace to you.

    Don't tan....
it won't do anything for you except give you wrinkles and put you at risk for cancer.
Use fake tanning creams or airbrush sprays, but don't pay money to lay in a bed of death.

    Don't smoke.
Fresh air is free to breathe and better for your health.

    :-D Smile.

Remember what your parents tell you and thank them for their advice.
Even if you don't believe it, I can assure you, in 10-20-30 years, you'll understand exactly why they said the things they did.  And you too may repeat them to your children someday.
And if you don't thank them now, someday it may be too late.

Don't  blur the line between friends and lovers.  You can love someone and be their friend, but never exclude them from either side.

    Take lots of pictures.
    And back them up.
    Someday, the pictures you take,
    may be the
     only memories
left of special times in your life.
    Someday,
    the pictures you take,
may be the only memories left behind for those that love you.

    Wear your seatbelt....
not only because it will save you, but because people will miss you if you are taken from them.

    Use your turn signal.

    Hold doors open for others.

    Smile at old people.
They have been one Earth longer than you, and they are envious of the time you still have ahead of you.
You will be in their spot some day.
Smiling at them thanks them for sharing their planet with you and lets them know that their are good people still to grow old in this world when they leave it.

    Save your money.
a little bit at a time....
    but remember again,
Money will not buy life.....  because your life can not be priced.

Listen to the advice of other's because sometimes the best point of view is one that is not your own.

    Trust People.
    no matter what!
Until they give you a specific reason NOT to trust them.
Do this on an individual basis and never punish people for what someone else did to you in the past.

A real man takes care of his woman.
A real woman stands by her man.

THE KEY TO EVERY RELATIONSHIP IN EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE IS ::::::COMMUNICATION:::::
Someday, if you ignore that fact, you will come back to this blog post and kick yourself in the head.

    Talk.
    Compromise.
    Give.

Understand that changing yourself is necessary to grow as a person.  But never lose site of the GOOD QUALITIES you have and don't give in if someone wants you to change them.

Don't be afraid to say I love you.
It boosts other people's moods and it makes you feel happy inside when you express that emotion.

    Cuddle.
It scientifically is proven to boost your endorphins, improve your mood, and can give you (and whoever you cuddle with)  the same euphoric effect as a drug!

    Never fall asleep angry.

Don't let grief turn into anger..... it will never go away.   I speak from experience.

Remember that funerals are not about the dead, but are a way to support the living and those left behind.

Marriage is something that has nothing to do with flowers, dresses, prices of decorations, or a guest list.

Marriage is a celebration of a higher level of commitment between two people.

    Love knows no Gender....
    or Color.

THINK before you act.   And think before you speak.

Friends will come and go in your life and eventually fade away.
But remember, everyday you have the opportunity to become close with new and different people.

Stop dying your hair so much.   And stop painting a new face on in the mirror.

Depression and anxiety are not a sign of weakness.
They are a sign of strength over years of troubling times.
Once you are in your 20's you will endure so many things you can't even begin to fathom right now, and by the end of your 20's you'll be glad you sought out help along the way.

Embrace modern day medicine especially when it comes to your mental health.
It's based off of what has worked since the beginning of time, but it's been tweaked and improved over the centuries.

Learn to protect your OWN ass.
    Take a self defense class,

    learn karate,
and don't be afraid to protect yourself, even if you're unsure you are in real danger.

    MEDITATE.
Even if you don't know what it is or how to do it...
Lock yourself in a small room, shut your eyes, and just SIT.

    And finally...

When people around you are going through a hard time..... reach out....
Karma is real and it is good....
And trust me...the older you get, the more you need help from the people you've reached out and been there for in the past.

You don't have to believe what I've told you above, but in 10 years you'll read it again and you'll cry.
    You'll see.

Because the advice was so easy to read, but you wouldn't believe it at the time.  And you will see how true it all is.

Just trust me on the tanning though!
