Beginning to Run + Running in Heat + Shape Diva Dash

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Despite the 90 degree temperatures last week I ran 6 out of 7 days.   I was working on 2-2.5 miles so that this week I can work towards 3.

I began running again last month. It's the only exercise I can do and not get sick of.   I think that's because running is something where I can see my progress since I'm literally taking steps and moving forward.  I've been reading up on some random tips from other runners like whether or not to wear underwear under your running pants (lol), toe calluses, and how to train for a 5K.  Any tips you have would be awesome!

I'm training for a 5K at the end of August which you can read about here.

I also just signed up for the Shape Magazine Diva Dash in September. I'm super stoked, it's near Philly so it's close and it looks like a great challenge.

Are any of you planning to attend either event?

  1. don't push yourself to hard. It best to increase .25 to a half mile each week.

  2. awesome job! i remember my first 5k...it was a great accomplishment! now i'm training for my first marathon, lol. i did (and still do) lots of reading on tips, etc, but the one thing i learned is that you have to experience it for yourself. for example, after researching and reading tons of runner's blogs, i was convinced that i needed a super supportive marathon shoe...big, thick, lots of cushioning. turned out those shoes caused me more injury! after visiting several running stores, i learned that i have a totally normal arch and can get away with a minimal shoe like nike. i tried three pairs before returning to my trusty nikes!
i only got calluses once, and it was because my shoes were too big. one thing i do to prevent blisters is vaseline my toes! just a little in between the toes...never had a blister yet!
    good luck on your 5k!
