One part of any pet owner's life that can get out of control fast is the amount of pet supplies they have and how they store it. Add to that the rush to buy something you think you need before you realize you already had it, and now you're out some money too! So whether you have one pet or several like I do, here's how to organize and simplify pet supplies.
Know What You Need
Before you start buying everything out there just because think you may need it someday, stop and think about what you really DO need. First aid supplies are of course a priority but then consider a leash and collar (and MAYBE one back up), food and water dishes with 1 or 2 back ups if you want to place one outside as well, grooming products, and toys.
Control How Much You Own
Now, the important part is that you don't need multiples of all these things. So come up with a place in your home for where all pet supplies will be stored (since food is usually in the kitchen so it's okay if you select a different area and don't keep food there) and take a look at how much space you have. Now make sure you get rid of duplicates when it comes to grooming supplies. If you have 3 brushes for your cat but only ever use 1, why keep all 3?

When it comes to toys, make sure you have some sort of toy bin to corral everything when not in use, but make sure you go through that bin every few months. Get rid of icky chews that need replaced, torn stuffies, and toys that never get looked at or even sniffed.
If your pet has clothing like a jacket for bad weather walks, make sure you only have a few main items like a sweater, jacket, and booties.
Organize Carefully
I always use little bins in my dog supply drawer to keep things separate. Brushes, oral health products, and paw balm go in one container, clothing in another, spare harness and leash in another, and the first aid supplies go in a bin in the bathroom linen closet because that's where the human first aid supplies is located. If I am in a rush to grab something I can easily know where it's at without a second thought.
You will have to regularly revisit your pet supply storage to check expiration dates on medication, treats, and any toys that are no longer needed.
Don't forget that even pets need some organization too!
