I wanted to take some time to talk about something that can be controversial - collectibles. Some people are into things and collect them, myself included. But as a millennial, growing up I swear things got collected just because they existed. It didn't have to be something I was super interested in either, it just was something that existed and you could collect them all so that's what we all did.
But what happens to all those items? Well, I can tell you that with items I collected, they just sat in a room or a bin. As I grew up, they weren't touched and I even forgot about them. Then I moved out of my childhood home and into the world and still didn't care for all those little collectibles.
Move after move, house after house, the items just sat in storage. Until one day in the last 5 years when I decided it was time to let them go because maybe there is someone out there that wants them more than I do. I can't even tell you what the items were, that's how little they meant to me. But after I got rid of them I vowed to never again collect things for no reason. It doesn't serve my budget nor does it fit into my house. I don't want it to take up space, I don't want to have to clean it out someday, and I don't want to try and find a home for it again.
So next time you go to get something simply because you have several of them, or next time you decide to start a collection of something for a child, ask yourself if it's worth it? If it is - that's great. Trust me - I do have items from childhood that I collected, but most of them are things I decorate my house with.
What are your thoughts on collectibles?
