Everyone should have the chance to have a proper break at least once a year - a real holiday. But the problem is that a lot of the time, taking that break can just be too expensive, not to mention the logistics of travel and everything that goes with it. But rather than skipping a holiday when you definitely need one, what about a staycation? That’s not going to involve airports, luggage, or stressful itineraries at all, and as long as you create the right environment, it’s going to be just as special and relaxing as you need it to be. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more.
Turn Outdoor Space Into An Escape
Your garden, patio, or deck actually has a lot more potential than you probably realise, and with a few changes, it can easily become your favourite place to relax, making it ideal for a good staycation. The best thing to do is start by thinking about how you want to use the space - is it a place for morning coffee, for example, or maybe lazy afternoons with a book, or perhaps evening gatherings with friends? Once you know, you can set it up the right way.
Comfort is what really counts, which is why you might want to add some soft lighting with lanterns or string lights, and bring out some cushions or outdoor rugs. Plus, make sure there's a mix of shade and sun so you can stay in one spot whatever the time of day.
If you’re lucky enough to have a pool that’s definitely got to be part of your staycation, and it’ll probably be a big part, but only if you maintain it well and take care of it. You’ll need clean water, fresh pool liners, and a few loungers, and then you can totally transform your outdoor space into something that feels like a fancy hotel.
Think About What You Actually Love On Holiday
What’s the thing you always look forward to when you go away? It could be the long, slow breakfasts, for example, not having to set an alarm, late-night swims, or a million other things. And of course, you can recreate a lot of that at home - and you should.
One thing you could do is make a menu for breakfast and actually sit down to enjoy it without rushing, and why not try out a few new recipes you don’t usually have time for, or stock the freezer with some lovely treats? If you want the feeling of waking up somewhere new, change your bedding before the staycation starts, and that’s going to make an instant difference too.

Disconnect Properly
One of the hardest parts of taking time off at home is actually switching off - it’s tempting to check emails, tidy up, or start small chores because you’re right there… but you’ve got to resist.
If you want it to work and feel like you’ve had a proper break, you need to treat your staycation in the same way you would a real holiday, so turn off notifications, set an out-of-office message if you need to, and make a plan to do absolutely nothing productive. You’re meant to be taking a break, not catching up.
