There are a variety of things that you can do when your parents move into a care home. It might have been a tough decision for everyone involved to do this, and it might still be something that people are struggling with, but you’ve just got to do your best now. Keep in mind that they are in the best place for them to get the help and support that they need round the clock, and that is what is most important.
But, what can you do? How can you support them when they are in there? Good question, and one we’re going to be answering right now.
Watch Out For Anything Abnormal
The first thing that you should be doing is watching out for anything that doesn’t quite seem right. We understand that this is not always easy to see, but you need to know how to identify risk factors for abuse so that you can notice it if it does happen. Now, don’t panic because it’s just a few bad eggs, the same way that you have in every profession. Of course, that doesn’t make it okay, but it should give you peace of mind that most people who work in care do so because they genuinely care about the people that they are supporting.
If there is anything abnormal going on though, either with your parents or with any of the other patients, you need to say something.
Visit Regularly
You should also do your best to visit regularly so that they see you often. If you’re close to your parents, they’re going to want to see you so that they know you’re still around. We understand that you have your own life and that it might be hard to find the time, but we promise that it’s worth it, even if it’s just for half an hour.
You don’t have to sit there all day, but it’s good if you can let them see you as much as they can. Don’t forget, the chances of them making friends in the nursing home are extremely high, so they will have other people around, but they’re not a replacement for you.
Take Them Out If You Can
Finally, if your parent is able to go out and do activities, then you should be taking them to do this when you can. Plan days out that will be fun for all of you. If you’ve got kids then you can get them involved. There are so many nice options, it’s just a case of planning, and then making them happen.
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the ways that you can support your elderly parents when they are in a care home. The more effort that you put into this, the more you’re going to be able to offer them the support that they need. It might be tricky in the beginning, but you’ve got this, we promise.
