The thing with pest infestations is that they never come in loud and announce their presence. Usually, by the time you notice the “guests” have already made themselves at home and are living with you rent-free.
And when it's obvious you're staring at the proof you have more than just a little infestation you have quite the issue on your hands. But are the signs you need to be looking out for to stop an infestation taking hold or address your pest problems before things spiral?
Sounds After Dark
A soft shuffling after dark? It’s not the wind rustling through the windows.
Mice, rats. Squirrels, if you're really unlucky. They move when you don't, they come out after dark, and those few faint scratches you heard in the walls are now a party going on, and you weren’t invited. Because once you have one pest come in, you have many more; one mouse multiples into ten, and suddenly you're overrun.
Weird Smells That Linger
Have you got a somewhat sour, stale scent lingering in your home? That's another clue that you have pest issues. The source is usually hiding somewhere you can't see it—under a sink, behind a fridge, or in your attic insulation.
It's the droppings, nesting materials or worse. You can spray, clean and light every candle you own but until you get to the source of the problem you won't fully eradicate it.

Little Damages
Little damages in your home don't stay little forever. Those nibbled wires or cables with teeth marks in them, this is how it starts.
Rodents gnaw to keep their teeth sharp, and they'll go for anything—plastic wires, wood, nothing is safe. So the next time you find a nibbled wire, don't just shrug it off, call pest control services, and address it right away.

Hidden Evidence
Evidence that you have pests doesn't always look you right in the face. Most warning signs are in locations you really need to get close to so you can see them. You're looking for tiny black specks, shredded bits of paper, or insect wings caught on window tracks. All of it is evidence, and you probably didn't notice it because you weren't looking for it.
Pull the cooker out, check under your appliances, and take a closer look behind furniture; this is where the evidence will be.

Pets Acting Strange
The thing is, your pets, if you have them, will notice something untoward going on before you will. If your dog is always staring at one spot in the house, or they're acting differently, or your cat keeps sniffing the same corner, check things out. They're probably trying to alert you that they're not the only animal in the house these days because they pick up scent trails faster than we do, and they can hear sounds more acutely, too, meaning even the slightest sign of pests in your home will be more obvious to them.
The early warning signs of an infestation are always small, but knowing what to look out for means you can nip things in the bud quickly so they don't get out of control.
