We tend to think that, if we want to transform our home and give it a beautiful new look that makes us feel cozy, proud and like our house really is our home, that we will have to spend huge amounts of time and money and maybe even get the contractors in, to make it happen but you know what? It’s often the little touches that really make your home feel put together, like you carefully curated it with your style and comfort in mind. It really doesn’t have to be a major operation.
If that sounds good to you, then read on for some of the ways you can use little touches to make your home feel put together.
Get rid of the clutter
Okay, so before you do anything else, it is a good idea to get rid of any clutter that is filling up your home, and which you do not love or need to be there. It’s really hard for your space to feel curated or put together when there is stuff seemingly strewn all about the place with no thought whatsoever, right? So, channel that part of you deep inside that is more Marie Kondo than pack rat, remove anything that isn’t adding to your space, then you can move on and start making changes that will make your home sing.
Paint colors
If you’re up for a little decorating, then changing the paint colors in your home is a really excellent way of making your home feel put together. You do not have to have the same color in every room of your home, although that is a great way for your space to look put together but you should find a color scheme that works. So, for example, you could use different shades of creams or make sure that the whole house is decorated in neutrals. If you love dramatic colors, then make sure all of your house is decorated with dramatic paint. It needs to flow together basically.
Fabrics
The fabrics you choose to have in your home can either elevate your home or detract from it and make it look thrown together rather than carefully put together. When it comes to fabrics, it’s good to have a mix and layer them up, but if you want that layered look to work, then it’s best to stick to quality natural fabrics like wool, cotton, linen velvet and silk. Make sure fabrics are in complementary colors - different shades of one color works well, and a mix of plain and patterned fabrics will always add some interest to the space.
Wall decor
Bare walls can work if you favor the minimalist look, but they hardly look carefully curated, do they? To truly look put together your walls should have some interesting stuff to look at. So, a piece of abstract art, a Rolex clock, a gilded mirror or even some plants that climb the walls are all good options depending on your own personal taste and the look you are trying to curate. You could also choose one or more walls and decorate them with patterned wallpaper to add a lasting point of interest.
Crown molding
Crown molding is one of the best tricks there is to make a home look more polished and put together. Placing it in the space where the walls meet the ceiling just adds a nice little detail that shows you have thought about your space and how to make it look more interesting. Patterned is better than plain, but if you’re a sleek, slick, plain kind of person, then having crown molding there will still look better than not.
Knobs and handles
A really subtle, but really effective, way to make your home feel more put together is to remove basic door knobs, handles, and even door knockers ns letterboxes, and replace them with more interesting ones, whether that means replacing chrome fittings with gold ones or replacing plain round knobs with hare or star or flower-shaped ones.
Fancy Furniture
Whether it’s a dramatic teal velvet sofa, an oversized leather couch or an easy chair that dates back to the 50s and provides a contrast to the rest of your modern pieces, your furniture can make or break your space, and how put together it feels so be sure to curate it with comfort and statements in mind.
As you can see, it is totally possible to transform your space and make it feel more intentional, without breaking the bank or remodeling the whole place!
