How To Enjoy Your Relationship On Your Own Terms

Thursday, April 5, 2018

When it comes to your relationship, you may find that you feel a lot of pressure to stick to convention. Because as with pretty much everything else in life, there is a precedent for it! We see relationships all around us, we subconsciously take in our parents' relationship, and we then find that we try to follow the same kind of path as others have. However, this isn’t always going to be the best for us. Everybody is different, so you can’t always go after what others have and be happy. In fact, the key to a happy relationship is going to be slightly different to everybody. And when the relationships you’ve been exposed too aren’t exactly healthy, you may be even more inclined to do things differently. So here’s how to enjoy your relationship on your own terms.

Find Your Own Rhythm
It’s okay to want to test the waters and figure out what works best for you. When you’re in a new relationship, you don’t have to follow a set path. Make sure that you take the time to figure out what works for you. From how you want to spend your time together to how you want the relationship to progress - it’s all personal. No matter how conventional or how unique you want to be, don’t feel the pressure to do things a certain way. Just enjoy your relationship for what it is and find your own rhythm.

Be Unorthodox
If you have a vision of how you want things to go or how you want things to be, then stick to it. You don’t have to do things the way others do. So go ahead at look at engagement rings by 77 Diamonds to pick out your own, propose to your partner if you want, or live together before you even think about whether you want to get married or not. If you’re happy, it’s okay to do things your own way.

Enjoy Your Space
Next, you’re going to want to make sure that you do enjoy your space. Don’t ever feel guilty about this. You don’t have to spend all of your time together to prove that you have a good relationship. You don’t have to live together if you don’t want to. Just do what works best for your happiness.

Follow Your Own Path
Maybe you don’t want to get married or have kids just yet? And that’s okay. You don’t have to be in a rush, or you don’t have to do it at all! Don’t crush your own happiness just to fit into society. If you’re happy being just you, then following your own path is the best way to go.

Different Is Good
Others may question your relationship, or wonder why it’s different to the norm, but don’t let them get to you. Because you’re going to find that, actually, your way of doing things is always going to be the right way. As long as you’re happy and your relationship is working, then continue to do things on your own terms. Sticking to convention could mean that you both feel unhappy in your relationship - so it’s better to realize that being different is good.

  1. 'Following your own path' and recognising that 'different is good' is key. It reminds me of my husband. In the lead up to me being a wife, the women in my family gave me all sorts of advice on how and what they feel 'the perfect wife' should be and do, but what they didn't realise that I was getting married to a man who just wanted his wife to be his best friend who he could chill and have fun in life with.
