What's In A Name? Which Brands To Choose When Buying A Car

Wednesday, April 4, 2018

When you’re shopping around for a new car, and you’re narrowing down your options, what are your priorities? What considerations do you bear in mind when you’re making decisions about which vehicle to go for? For many of us, the brand name is important, but what’s really in a name? If you’re looking for a replacement car, here are some tips to help you find the right brand for you.

Which type of vehicle do you need?

There are myriad types of vehicle on offer in the US. When you start your search, think about what you want from your car and the kind of wagon you’re looking for. Do you want a sporty number? Do you need an MPV for a growing family? Does the idea of a 4x4 appeal? Often, the kind of car you want will affect the manufacturer you choose. Brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche may be famed for speed and style, but they’re probably not going to feature in your shortlist if you’re after something practical and spacious. When you’re searching for an MPV, safety is key, so look for brands that perform well on safety tests like Volvo, Hyundai, Kia, Honda and Ford.

How much do you want to spend?

If you were asked to rattle off a list of expensive car brands, you’d probably be able to name quite a few. Supercars and sports cars are nice to look at, but they come with a hefty price tag. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on a new car, there are certain names you can rule out immediately. If you’re looking for an affordable, reliable motor, rather than something that is going to turn heads, it’s best to shun Aston Martins and Jaguars in favor of more purse-friendly options. You’ll often find that manufacturers have a range of cars available to cater for all budgets. If you’re buying a Ford, for example, you can choose from a huge range of models, from the compact Ka to the Edge SUV. If you’re not quite sure what you want, but you know how much you want to spend, it’s wise to take some time to look around showrooms, compare different makes and models and book some test drives.

How much does the brand name matter to you?

Branding is all about creating positive impressions, and brand reputation wears off on all of us. If you were given a list of manufacturers and asked to come up with a word in reaction to each brand name, this would give you a good idea of how you feel about different cars. Some brands have a better reputation than others in terms of safety and reliability, while some are considered much trendier or more exclusive than others. If you are buying a new car, it’s important to understand how much the brand matters to you. Do you really care if a manufacturer is famed for being a bit dull if you really like the car, it is affordable, and it performs well on safety tests? We’re all different, and reputation matters more to some than others.

If you’re looking for a new car, think about how important the brand is to you and how it influences how you much you spend and the kind of vehicle you choose.
