For most people who go away to college, it's the first time they've really had to take care of themselves. The freedom can feel great, but you also have a certain amount of responsibility on your shoulders too. You have to do everything, from making appointments to doing your laundry. One thing that a lot of college students fail to take into account is looking after their health. They neglect to take into account how a controlled home environment might have helped them stay healthy. Now, with all the freedom to do what you want, you can eat as much junk food or do as little exercise as you feel like.

But taking care of yourself while you're at college is important. You need to look after your physical and mental health if you want your college experience to be a positive one. Try these tips to stay healthy while you're at college.

Manage Your Time

Learning to manage your time while at college can be tricky. You often don't have the same daily routine as you did in high school, with classes starting and ending at different times. On top of attending classes, you're expected to do a lot of independent study, which you have to fit around anything that you might need or want to do in your free time. Managing your time well can really help you if you want to stay both physically and mentally healthy. It helps you to ensure you have time to eat balanced meals, be active and get enough sleep, while still fulfilling your responsibilities for college.

Take Time to Relax

College can get pretty busy, although some people may be busier than others. Even if your classes are less demanding than some, it's still important not to spend all of your time on your studies. Wanting to do well is admirable, but college is also meant to be a fun experience that helps you to grow as a person. You should make sure that you're still taking time to relax, whether that means going out with friends or staying in and watching a movie.

Know When to Ask for Help

When you're feeling overwhelmed or you think you need some help managing your health, don't hesitate to ask for help. A lot of college students may find that they struggle with their mental health, while others can sometimes develop issues surrounding drugs and alcohol. There are lots of resources that can help you, from rehab centers such as to your student support resources at college. You can talk to your friends and family if you need someone to discuss any worries with. Your college should have support staff and may provide medical and therapy services that can help you too.

Eat Well (and Cheaply)

The college student diet has become something of a cliche. Everyone talks about the "freshman fifteen" because it's so common for new students to put on weight in their first semester. Eating things like instant ramen noodles because they're cheap or various junk food because it's convenient is common. But it's important to try and eat healthy while you're at college. If money is tight, there are plenty of recipes you can find online that will help you to eat cheap but healthy food. Being clever with your budget can make it possible to eat well even if you can't afford to spend much.

Stay Active

Another important way to stay physically healthy and manage your weight when you start college is to make an effort to be active. The great thing about college is that there are usually plenty of different ways to get involved with sports or physical activities. You can go to the gym or join a team, or maybe attend an exercise class. Whether you prefer to exercise on your own or with others, there are options available. In some college towns, walking and cycling are great ways to keep fit too.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleeping well is also a must when you're a college student. Between partying with friends and pulling all-nighters to finish essays, you can often find that you're not sleeping as much as you should. But making sleep a priority is essential and should be part of managing your time well. Of course, it's also important not to go too far in the other direction and sleep too much.

When you're heading to college, don't forget to take care of yourself and your health for the best time.
