What Physical Changes To Expect When Getting Older

A lot of people dread getting older because they don't know what to expect. They are afraid that they will start forgetting things, get wrinkles and gray hair, and not be able to do the same activities that they used to. While this may happen in some cases, it doesn't have to.

Memory

The first thing most people think about when it comes to getting older is forgetfulness. If you're like most, then you probably can't remember where you put your keys or phone half of the time - let alone something actually important like homework! However, research shows that memory loss is more closely linked with stress than age. According to a study by scientists at Washington University School of Medicine, they took a look at changes in the hippocampus - the part of the brain that controls memory and emotions - over a long period of time by studying mice.

In this study, researchers found that when they gave mice omega-3 fatty acids in their food for just three months, it improved the rodents' abilities to navigate mazes and remember things. Researchers then performed tests on humans, which suggest that getting enough omega-3s in our diet could have a major impact on our cognitive functions as well.

Stress is another factor related to memory loss. Have you ever been so stressed out about something big going on in your life that you've completely forgotten what happened several hours ago? You're not alone! According to the study, research suggests that stress can actually shrink the hippocampus, which is why it's so hard to remember things when we're stressed out.

Gray Hair

While stress and forgetfulness may be annoying, there are plenty of other physical changes that come with getting older that aren't so bad. For example, most people start to get wrinkles and gray hair as they age. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - in fact, it can be quite the contrary! According to age-old stories of mankind, many people believe that these signs of aging are symbols of experience and wisdom. And as for the wrinkles, they can be prevented or at least slowed down with the right skincare products.

Muscle Mass

Another change that often comes with getting older is a decrease in muscle mass. This is because the body produces less human growth hormone as we age, which is responsible for muscle growth. However, this doesn't mean that we have to stop being active altogether. In fact, staying active is one of the best ways to keep muscle mass and bone density high as we age. Osteoporosis can be addressed with kyphoplasty treatment if needed. According to most health experts, some good exercises to do as you get older include walking, swimming, and biking.

There You Have It!

So overall, getting older doesn't have to be a bad thing! Yes, there may be some physical changes that come with it, but many of these can be prevented or slowed down with the right lifestyle choices. So don't worry - you've still got plenty of time to enjoy life!
