Ah, it's bittersweet, the end of summer and the start of Fall. I love Fall so much but sometimes it's unseasonably warm and other times it's just cold, rainy, and windy and I barely get a chance to enjoy the beautiful colors of the leaves. Either way, September is the month to begin thinking of prepping your home and yard for Fall. Here are some things I do during the month of September to prepare for the season ahead.
Harvest your Veggies and Herbs
Use the internet or a book to figure out which herbs and flowers need cut back or pulled out and which need prepared to winter themselves before coming back next year. If you grow vegetables, pick the last of your crop towards the end of the month or whenever your plants seem to be done. If you are into canning and preserving your food, this is the time to start.
Winterize Garden Beds
If you don't have any fall crops or fall flowers and herbs, you can begin to winterize your garden beds. When the leaves fall in October and November they can provide a natural mulch in your garden beds. I always go out at the end of winter and turn the soil around. This is also the time to pull weeds and dead things out of your garden beds.
Service and Store
Now is also the time to plan your service on certain lawncare items that can be done over the late fall and early winter when you no longer need them. It's also time to rearrange your setup in the garage or storage shed and put your garden tools away nicely until next year.
Remove Lawn and Garden Decor
Once Fall is here in my town, I start to take my garden ornaments out and put them in the porch till the Spring. It helps me not have to deal with it later when it gets too chilly out plus I don't have to worry about Fall breezes carrying anything off.
Decorate for Fall
This is the time to get pumpkins and haybales and anything else you'll decorate your yard with for Fall and Halloween. Bonus points if you grow your own pumkins!
Get Your Heat Serviced
Call a service company that specializes in HVAC so that once you turn your heat on for the season, everything works well.
Launder Your Blankets
Now is a good time to switch out pillows and blankets inside the house and make sure everything has been laundered and freshened up. Also make sure you vacuum under the sofa cushinos really well!
Clean Windows
Now that you'll be spending more time indoors over the next fewmonths, make sure you vacuum out your window sill, clean the glass inside and out, and put any screens in. Also, this is the ideal time to wash and clean your curtains!
Prepare For The Change In Weather
Fall brings weather changes that can be both a blessing and a curse. For example, the trees will shed their leaves, producing a beautiful golden blanket all around the neighbourhood; however, these leaves can affect our homes by becoming clogged in the gutters and drains. You need to ensure you clear these regularly to avoid further damage.
Similarly, if you live in an area that is prone to extreme weather, make sure you have prepared for the worst. You could invest in a Hurricane Screen for your home if need be, or buy a backup generator in case the power goes out.
So are you guys ready for Fall? I am!
