Questions to Ask Yourself Before Getting a Dog

Owning a dog is a lot of responsibility, but it also comes with a lot of joy. But how do you know if getting a furry new friend is the right move for you? Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before you start the adoption process.

Can You Afford it?

Although dogs are wonderful pets, they aren't always cheap. You'll have the typical food and toy expenses, but there are others that come up as well. The first thing you'll have to do is pay for the adoption fee. The amount will depend on what kind of dog you get and where you get it from. For instance, if you get a pink papered german shepherd from a breeder, it may cost more than if you get a chihuahua from your local shelter. Dogs also have to have annual checkups with a veterinarian. In addition to this, you'll have to pay to see the vet if your dog gets sick. If you go out of town a lot, you'll also want to factor in the expense of boarding your dog.

Do You Have Time?

Dogs need plenty of love and attention. You have to ask yourself if you have enough time to give to your dog. If you work 12 hour days, you probably won't be able to handle a high energy dog that needs to go on long walks multiple times a day. It can also be difficult to be a dog owner if you travel frequently.

Can You Handle It?

Dogs can be a lot to handle, especially if you get a puppy. To start with, you'll need to house train your pup. This takes a lot of time and energy, and there will likely be a few messes made around your home. Your dogs also tend to chew up furniture and other belongings, so you'll need to be prepared for this as well. It's OK if you feel that you aren't ready to take on this responsibility, but it's a good thing to have figured out before you actually bring a dog home.

Having a pet isn't right for everyone, but if you answered yes to these questions, you may be ready to adopt a pup. The next step is figuring out what kind of furry friend you want to bring home. Check out breeders in your area or visit different shelters to find just the right dog for you.
