Three factors to bear in mind when choosing a conveyor belt system for your business

Dating back to the 1800s, conveyor belt systems have grown exponentially in terms of their possible applications thanks to developments in the materials used to make them and the designs themselves. This means that no matter what industry your company operates in if your business is large scale enough, you may well find that installing one could help you operate in a safer, easier, and more efficient manner.

It’s important to bear in mind that not all conveyor belt systems are the same, though, so when choosing one, you have to make sure that it’s the right one for your specific needs. Otherwise, you might end up wasting time and money rather than saving it! Here are three factors to think about when making your decision.

Space available

The first thing to do is look at the space you have available to install a conveyor belt system to make sure that you choose a size and shape that’s appropriate. Getting advice from conveyors specialists can be very helpful at this early stage, but some of the factors to bear in mind include whether the belt will need to go around corners or travel up and down to different floors within a building. Every location is unique, so try to go for a custom-made system for you rather than pre-made to the specifications decided by the manufacturer. When you’re looking at how much room you have, be sure to factor in enough space for your employees to comfortably move around and access the belt and that you adhere to all safety guidelines.

Surrounding environment

There’s more to consider about the environment the conveyor belt system will be in than just the size of the space. For example, will the belt be inside, outside, or move through both environments? What sort of temperatures will the belt have to be able to withstand? Will it be placed within an environment that is prone to dust or humidity? All of these factors can affect the operation of the belt system and the type of material it will need to be made from.

Materials to be transported

Finally, the materials and goods that you intend to move around on the conveyor belt system will make a huge difference to the type you need. For example, will you be carrying large, heavy items or very small ones that might slip through gaps? Will the belt be transporting goods that are particularly fragile and so have to be moved at a slower speed? Are your products subject to strict sanitation requirements, such as food or pharmaceuticals? If you’re a food manufacturer, will you be cleaning, cutting, or baking on the production line? Once again, all of these factors make a difference when it comes to choosing a suitable conveyor. There is a possible answer to all your company's needs, but by knowing your requirements upfront, you’ll make finding the solution much more straightforward!
