5 Effective Photography Tips

Thursday, February 27, 2020

Photography can be an important part of your daily life whether it's taking photos for your blog or website, photographing products for your business, or photographing people as your career.  Whether you're just starting out or you've been dabbling for a while, these tips can really help you get the best out of your camera and your photos.

Know Your Camera

Your camera is an important piece of your craft.  Learn the ins and outs of your camera by looking on the internet for blog posts with tips and watch lots of video tutorials so you understand what the settings mean, which settings to use for which type of scenario, and how to maintain and clean your equipment.  There are different types of lenses for different photography and it's also important to understand that photography takes practice.  If you can find courses or workshops in your community, sign up and bring your camera with you.  Consider purchasing a proper storage bag to protect your equipment and a tripod and remote if the photography you are into can benefit from it.

Understand Lighting
At every blog conference I've attended photography is always one of the session topics and for good reason.  One of the big things I've learned is that lighting is key whether you're inside or outside.  There are certain times of the day that are better for outdoor photography like morning and before dusk.  If you're shooting actual models, you need to consider the direction the sun will be so it's not in their eyes.  It's also important to realize that you can't shoot a subject with light behind it or it can look washed out in the photo.  There are indoor lights you can buy to photograph people and products.  Bright light indoors is a good thing and really makes all the details show.

Props and Backgrounds
Props always add to the overall feel of the photograph.  If you are photographing products, it can help to have neutral props like plants, desk decor, and other odds and ends with it.  If you're shooting photography of people then you need to consider what background you need and whether you can buy a background or if you can find the right scenery outdoors.

Look for a Mentor

People in the industry like Dan Doyle Pleasantville NY make it their career and also make it a point to highlight the importance of mentors.  When we were planning our wedding we actually talked to our photographer friend and he gave me lots of tips I can carry into my blog photography. Experts in the field can really help you grow as a beginner photographer.  Listen to their advice and don't be afraid to ask questions when you're unsure of something.

Practice Makes Perfect
As with anything, the more you practice, the more experience you gain.  Get out there and practice with different lighting, different subjects and different settings on your camera.  Learn to use editing software so you can practice with different adjustments and how to really make your work shine.

Never give up when you get frustrated.  Just keep challenging yourself to learn the ins and outs of photography and I promise you'll get better and better over time.
