How I’m Different from Who I Was 5 Years Ago

Friday, June 5, 2020

To keep it fun and light on a Friday, I decided I’d do another “about me” type of post. This time, I’m comparing who I was 5 years ago to who I am today. Of course, I’m still the same person in my core- Ellen the organized, crafty, nature lover, but I have improved in many ways. So here’s a look at what’s changed for the better.

I Give More

I always wanted to give back to the community but the problem is I don’t really have the money to do so. But the thing is, you can still give back by giving your time rather than your money. For the last 2 years I’ve spent every Monday evening visiting nursing home residents with Pixie doing pet therapy and 1 day a month with Stella at the library helping shy kids read to her. It’s very fulfilling even though there’s days I just want to go home from work and relax, I push myself to do my duty and I’m always glad I did afterwards.

I Am Less Impulsive

This is very much the case with money. Obviously 5 years ago I was paying down debt but now I’ve remained debt free with credit cards and I think VERY VERY carefully before each and every purchase. I am so proud of this with me because it’s something I always struggled with and I think the reward is the fact that I can remember how bad it felt to make foolish decisions with money, and how grateful I am to not be going through that again.

I Only Surround Myself with GOOD People

I used to have people around me that were toxic and whom I couldn’t trust. Over the years I asked myself what the point was. Why would I let people around me that are toxic and don’t serve a healthy relationship purpose? So I let them go. If I could offer you one bit of advice, it’s that. Don’t settle with friendships. Remember, it’s better to have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

I’m More Positive

I was positive 5 years ago but I still could get stuck it my own petty complaining ways. 5 years later and I can truly say that I am not like that at all. I feel joy more than I feel any other negative emotion. I wake up in a good mood and I find humor is the key for me. If something obnoxious happens to me, I immediately make a joke about it to myself and I can laugh it off.

I Practice Gratitude More

This is probably what helps me stay so positive. On a daily basis, I jot down 3 things I’m grateful for in the morning and at the end of the day I take note of 3 great things I experienced that day. It takes a few minutes of my time and it’s so worth it because it’s trained my brain to look for the positive on an automatic basis.

I Am Fearless

I no longer care what someone may think about a decision I make or how I express myself. I have come to realize that people will feel how they feel regardless of what I say or do. It’s just a distraction to worry about pleasing everyone else. This concept for me has been extremely freeing.

I Take Better Care of Myself

Sleep is a priority, staying active is a priority, and nutrition is more valuable to me. I fully grasp the concept that I need to take care of myself NOW so that I’m thriving in the future. And it’s paid off so far. I am a very healthy person and I still have yet to go to a hospital for any reason for myself. I really have no health issues and I am extremely grateful for that.

I Celebrate Life Everyday

I find reasons to use the good dishes, live life to the fullest, and not put things off for a more special time. I seriously feel like doing this will make me become an old lady with ZERO REGRETS someday.

Again, I’m so proud of myself and I encourage you to make a list of the ways you’ve improved over the last 5 years.
