What No One Tells You About Being A Blogger

Friday, June 19, 2020

Being a blogger is a pretty cool experience, but I’ve noticed some people don’t even know what a blogger really is or what it’s like. There are definitely a few types of bloggers like journalist bloggers for the news, people that use their blog as their diary, and people that blog as part of promoting their shop or business. But there’s also the bloggers like me, that do it as a side hustle and because they love it. I’ve been blogging almost 10 years now so I figured I’d tell you some things you may not know about what it’s like to be a blogger.

It’s time consuming in the beginning.

I wouldn’t say it’s time consuming as much these days because I’ve established a routine of posts, writing, emails, and other things but in the beginning it’s time consuming because you’re learning, writing, and figuring out how to actually blog. There were days I spent 4 hours trying to fix a single line of HTML coding on my blog just so it finally looked right. There were also days I spent 4 hours writing a bunch of posts that I could schedule to go up. Over time, you establish a schedule for when you do things. You may blog one day a week and write all your posts for the next 2 weeks. You may have designated times to check your email for possible sponsorship inquiries. You may have certain times of the day you need to check, interact, and post on social media.

You have to teach yourself.

I mean of course you can pay someone to do the design of your blog for you or you can even attend a paid course on how to do it yourself, but for bloggers like me who didn’t have the time or money to do those things, we learned through internet tutorials. Anything we couldn’t figure out on our own, we looked up online. Sometimes it’s stressful and time consuming. When someone asks me if I can teach them how to start a blog my answer is that I simply can’t. I just can’t. It’s too complicated of a thing with the way I learned. Every person has a different style, host site, and content. I can’t be in expert in the blogging field, but I can be knowledgeable in my own niche. There are plenty of books about blogging out there now you can turn to, some that weren’t around when I first started when blogging as a side hustle wasn’t as common.

Your intention is important.

If the sole reason you want to start a blog is to make money, like IMMEDIATELY, don’t bother trying. It doesn’t work that way. You have to spend lots of time organically building your traffic, developing viral content, networking with other bloggers, developing a business plan, and learning how to blog. When I first started I just did it for fun and was prepared to enjoy a little bit of extra money along the way, mostly in the form of free items in exchange for my review. After the first couple of years I had built up loyal followers and it helped my traffic get up which helped companies get interested in working with me.

You will meet amazing people.

I have made so many friends from blogging, whether they were other bloggers themselves, local people that found my blog, or people from anywhere in the world that love my blog and ended up becoming great friends with me. I seriously can’t imagine what my life would be like if I never started blogging.

I hope this gives you a little bit of insight into what blogging is really like.

I love reading and responding to comments but in order to get my reply you must ensure you are NOT a no-reply blogger. If you are, here are some quick steps to change that!

1. Go to the home page of your Blogger account.
2. Select the drop down beside your name on the top right corner and choose Blogger Profile.
3. Select Edit Profile at the top right.
4. Select the Show My Email Address box.
5. Hit Save Profile.
