Wearing Your Engagement Ring Before And After Marriage

Tuesday, March 6, 2018

Many often wonder about the engagement ring customs. There is often confusion over how they are worn, especially when combined with the wedding ring. This article will therefore feature all you need to know about how to wear what ring.

If you are still searching for the special ring that you can instantly tell has potential, there’s a vast range of diamond engagement rings in Brisbane. You will find online and high-street retailers offering an array of stones, cuts and more to fit your budget.

When it comes to wearing the ring though, there are often different ways to do it and many wonder what’s right or wrong. Couples may have their own unique way but there are traditions that several follows.

The Traditional Ring Finger

The fourth finger on the left hand used to be believe by ancient romans to be the finger that had the vein running straight to the heart. This finger was therefore symbolic as love and commitment on the lifeline of that vein. Even though today science has proven this theory wrong, the tradition lives on.

There are exceptions to the rule however. For example, certain cultures such as Greek and Russian will wear the ring on their right hand instead of left.

The Engagement Ring Finger
Now during the wedding, the couple will place each other’s wedding rings on the fourth finger of the left hand during the vows.

The engagement ring is normally worn on the fourth finger. On the wedding day though, things may seem a bit complicated. A simple way to solve this is by switching the engagement ring to the third finger on the day of the wedding. This way, during the ceremony, the partner can place the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand.

What Happens After The Wedding?

Afterwards, some women continue to wear it on their third finger. It is really up to you what you choose to do however. Some people choose to wear the engagement ring on the right hand instead.

Others completely stop wearing the ring altogether and put it away for safekeeping. Another option is to place both two together on the same finger or have them welded together. These are probably the most popular options.

The way you wear both wedding and engagement rings are ultimately up to you but what is important is that they feel comfortable and fit well. Ensuring the fit is perfect will keep the ring safe and prevent them from slipping off.

  1. I had no idea that some people choose to wear their engagement rings on their third finger! When my husband got my engagement ring it had two bands to add to it to make it a wedding ring. I sometimes wear a simple diamond on my ring finger on my right hand though. Interesting!

    1. That's how my engagement ring is. I got an enhancer for it as the wedding band so it has a band on top and bottom around the engagement ring.
