There are a lot of home improvements that can be DIY-ed. Repainting walls, fitting new flooring, taking out an internal wall and opening up your space, building bespoke storage solutions - really, if you can imagine it, you can probably get it done yourself!
But even so, a lot of DIY home improvement projects often end up in a strange limbo once they’re completed. For example, your new wardrobe that fits into the awkward nook in your bedroom is complete, but you still feel like there’s something missing.
And there just might be: the finishing touches! Here are a few you’ll want to remember to include the next time you try a DIY home project.
Paint or Stain
Sometimes, the finished look of a project might not be quite what was in your mind’s eye. And that’s OK, we can quickly rectify the problem.
All you need to do is head out to the DIY store, buy some varnish or some paint, and then come back and apply a few coats. Sure, it adds another step to the project overall, but it’ll be worth it for the sheer satisfaction you’ll get!
Make sure you buy paint or stainer that can be applied to the material you’ve been working with. Double check the cans to see what the manufacturer recommends they’re used on - as well as how to ‘seal’ the coat to stop it peeling off after a while.
Add Some Color
Just a pop of it, if need be! The same goes for texture, if you’ve already got a lot of color going on.
Because your brain is telling you that your finished project needs a bit more to either offset block colors or brighten up the negative space.
Whether that means painting on a pattern, hanging plants off the edge, or using a divider rail, experiment with them all and see what you end up liking.
Tidy Up the Edges
Any and all DIY projects can have that classic, slightly messy sheen to them. That’s totally fine - it’s part of the charm! And you can still look at the results of your project and be proud that you did it all yourself.
That being said, it might just bother you how many shavings, gunky bits, and general untidiness might still be in the picture. And if that’s what you’re feeling right now, we’ve got some good news: you can easily tidy up these edges too!
Got paint somewhere it shouldn’t be, like a door knob? Here’s a quick guide on stripping it off again. Laid a new floor yourself, and now have splodges of glue bunching up round the skirting board? Here’s how to remove glue from laminate floors in a few easy steps.
Shouldn’t take you more than 20 to 30 minutes, and then you’re really all done!
Just DIY-ed a home improvement project? Then let’s make sure you’re really happy with it. Have a look through the finishing touches above and apply as needed!
