3 Reasons For Blood In Your Mouth

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

Have you recently noticed that there’s a lot or even just low amounts of blood in your mouth? You might be concerned that this is a sign that something serious is going on. Is that this case? While it’s possible that this is the sign of a serious health issue, there are other possibilities that should be explored before you jump to that type of conclusion.

Too Much Pressure

Believe it or not, it’s possible that your gums are bleeding because you are brushing with too much pressure. Your gums are more sensitive than you think. There’s a right way and wrong way to brush your teeth and this is a common mistake. It can lead to even healthy gums bleeding. You may even want to consider opting to buy an electric toothbrush. Some of these can tell you when there is too much pressure.

Oral Cancer

A more serious concern would be that this is one of the first signs that you are suffering from a health issue like cancer. The good news is that this is unlikely to be the case. Indeed, there will usually be other signs with a health issue like this. For instance, you might want to check for white patches or spots on the inside of your mouth. If you notice an issue like this, it’s worth getting it checked by your dentist. A common cause of this unrelated to cancer would be clamping down on the folds of your mouth while asleep.

Poor Oral Health

Of course, one of the most common reasons for this type of issue is always going to be poor oral health. It is possible that you are suffering from this issue because you are not cleaning your teeth carefully or as often as you should. Your dentist will be able to help here too. They may start by completing an examination. They can then offer you whatever treatment you could need. Treatment will vary depending on the condition of your teeth and your gums. In some cases, you might have a gum infection. If that’s the case, it will often be necessary to complete more extensive procedures to fix the issue. This will ensure that you don’t develop other problems such as tooth infection or even eventually the loss of some of your teeth.

What Should You Do If You Notice Blood?

If you notice blood in your mouth after brushing, there are a few things that you can do. You can think about changing your brushing behavior and put less pressure on the brush, particularly when you are cleaning around the gums. You can also make sure that you are brushing more regularly and using floss as well as mouth wash to keep your teeth clean. If you are noticing bleeding when you are not brushing, this can be a more serious sign. As such, you should make sure that you are booking an appointment with your dentist. It’s important that you find out what’s going wrong and if possible correct it.
