Tips to Simplify Your Wardrobe

Monday, May 4, 2020

We’ve all had those moments where no matter how big or small or closet is, we struggle to find something to wear, we hate how unorganized it’s set up, or we just can’t seem to fit everything in the closet in a way that pleases us. That’s why I fully stand by the idea of having a simplified wardrobe so you have all of the things you love and none of the stress when you try to put laundry away, pick out an outfit, or even just walk past your closet. We have a smaller home so I don’t have a fancy walk in closet. I just have a standard floor to ceiling closet and I make it work as best as I can. Here are some ways to simplify your wardrobe like I have.

Minimize Duplicates

I’m so guilty of doing this with almost everything. If I find a shirt I love I buy a bunch of them in different colors, and most of the time I only wear the same two colors of it. Or I have like 4 or 5 white camisoles with some being torn and ratty looking. So the first thing to do is look at the things you have a lot of whether it’s sweatpants or tank tops, and get rid of the ones that are worn out, never worn, or don’t fit. I still have duplicates so it’s totally still possible to have a simplified wardrobe with more than one item but they aren’t excessive and they work perfectly together when one is in the laundry to be washed, the other’s still available.

Do the Hanger Trick

Turn all of your hangers backwards in your closet. When you wear something, turn the hanger back around. After a month or even 2, you can look in your closet and see exactly what you haven’t been wearing. I do this often and then I look at each reversed hanger and ask myself why the item hasn’t been worn. I usually can get rid of a few things each time I do this.

Try on EVERY PAIR of Pants

Pants are something that we tend to accrue a lot of and often times we keep them thinking they fit and we’ll wear them, yet we never do. Every 6 months I go through ALL of my pants and try them on. If they do, and they feel and look good, I keep them. If they don’t fit or if they don’t feel nice or look very nice, they get donated. This is a great idea also because pants can get bulky on hangers or in drawers so it’s always a good idea to go through them about twice a year.

The Semi-Annual Purge of Undies and Socks

Every 6 months I take my sock drawer and my underwear drawer and dump them out before I sit down and refold and reorganize them. As I do this, I find the socks and underwear with holes or that’s starting to come apart, I find pairs that I never wear because they’re uncomfortable, and I’m able to look at what I need to replace.

The Yearly Purge

To celebrate a new year, I do a purge every January on a weekend I am stuck inside the house trying to stay warm. I go through each item in my closet and put it on the bed. Then before putting each one back in, I evaluate if I want to keep it or not. It doesn’t have to be an enormous project but I promise making thing a yearly habit can help you re-evaluate what your wardrobe consists of and what you no longer need to keep.

One In – One Out

I enforce the One In- One Out rule with my wardrobe. If I’m buying something new, I have to get rid of something. This is a must in order to keep my closet from being cramped but also it’s a good discipline practice for myself to help me resist the urge to impulse buy and also to buy mindlessly. That being said, if I get rid of an item and it needs replaced, I keep a running list on my phone of what I need.

Hopefully these basic tips help you simplify your own wardrobe. For some reason, when your wardrobe is in order, your life feels so much more in order.
