Facebook Is No Longer Allowing "Like" A Page Entries in Giveaways [[IMPORTANT READ]]

Friday, August 15, 2014

If you are a blogger this is a super important post, so please read!

In case you haven't heard, Facebook updated their blog the other day to include some new guidelines.

This post included a blurb that read:
"You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app's Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike."

So basically... all those entries we have in giveaways that ask you to like a page on facebook... we can no longer do that.

So how will this affect your blog? Well, yesterday Rafflecopter updated their blog here to say:
"Second, the ‘Liking a Fan Page’ entry option is an entry option that can be set up where participants can receive an entry for being a fan of your Facebook page."

"According to Facebook’s new policies, this would fall under the rule of “incentivizing people to use social plugins or to like a Page”. Similar to the fan-gate functionality, this entry option will likely be removed before the November 5th deadline."

Thoughts?   PS - Make sure you spread the word so all bloggers know what's going on!

  1. Wow! What's the difference between hosting it straight on your Facebook page and using the giveaway app? That's not cool.

  2. I think what it means is you cannot make liking a page a "mandatory" entry. I had already heard about this, but from the standpoint of not making it permissable if it is MANDATORY. You can still ask them to "like" a page as an extra entry, (I think).....................

    1. I already checked around and it seems it means it can't be any kind of incentivized entry. meaning, you can't ask someone to like the page if there's any kind of incentive. and technically if liking your page gets them an entry... it's giving them an incentive. That's also why Rafflecopter is doing away with the facebook like option as well.
